The AFL-CIO is warning that a lockout by NFL owners could cost thousands of Americans their jobs and American cities more than $140 million in lost revenue.
On Monday, the national group revealed that it had sent a letter to NFL owners urging them to consider the potential ramifications a lockout in one of America’s “few thriving industries” could have on stadium workers and hotel and restaurant employees.
NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith has repeatedly said he believes owners are preparing for a lockout and points to television deals that will continue to pay the owners whether the games are played or not. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell counters that the money must eventually be paid back if the games are not played.
