BEREA, Ohio (AP) – Standing on the sideline, Jake Delhomme expects his spine to tingle the same way it has before his previous 12 NFL openers. Maybe a little more this time.
On Sunday in Tampa Bay, Delhomme will make his first start for the Cleveland Browns, who signed the 35-year-old quarterback to stabilize a troublesome position and provide leadership as they try to build a winner.
Delhomme says his transition after seven seasons in Carolina – his last with the Panthers was a nightmare of interceptions – has “gone somewhat smoothly.”
He played exceptionally well during the preseason, and Wednesday was selected one of six captains.
The Browns ended last year with a four-game winning streak and renewed optimism for this season.
