ST. LOUIS (AP) -Coach Steve Spagnuolo said no decision was made Monday about starting No. 1 draft pick Jason Smith at right tackle in the season opener at Seattle.
The Rams returned to practice at Rams Park after having the weekend off. Spagnuolo, in his first year as coach after spending the last two years as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, closed practice to the media except for the first 30 minutes, which the NFL requires teams to open.
In that first 30 minutes, Smith was seen working with the starting unit. However, Spagnuolo said nothing has been determined.
“No, we actually moved him around a little bit today,” Spagnuolo said about Smith, who was taken second overall in the draft. “Today’s Monday? I haven’t (made any decision) yet.”
For his part, Smith said he is not concerned.
llets are starting to fly.”
Quarterback Marc Bulger did not take any snaps from under center. Bulger is coming back from a broken right pinkie finger suffered taking a snap in practice on Aug. 17.
“We figured don’t put him under center today,” Spagnuolo said. “It’ll be another 48 hours before we practice again. The hope is that he’ll be able to do it on Wednesday, but we will wait and see how he feels Wednesday morning and then decide.”
There’s still some pain there, Spagnuolo acknowledged.
“At some point we have to test it, see how it feels and then go from there,” Spagnuolo said.
Bulger won’t have many choices to throw to as the Rams have only four receivers: Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson, Keenan Burton and Derek Standley. St. Louis does have 10 offensive linemen and 10 defensive linemen, accounting for 38 percent of the active roster.
Of the 10 defensive linemen, five are ends, with another two on the practice squad.
Spagnuolo said it came down to what the club needed and who the staff felt were the best players to keep.
