GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -Thursday night’s preseason game in Tennessee could be quarterback Brian Brohm’s best chance to show the Green Bay Packers why he once was considered a potential Top 10 draft pick.
It also could be his last.
After being beaten out by less-heralded fellow rookie Matt Flynn to be Aaron Rodgers’ primary backup last year, Brohm is having another uneven preseason.
Flynn is nursing a shoulder injury and Rodgers is likely to play only a series or two, meaning Brohm will play most of the game. Another shaky performance could put his roster spot in jeopardy.
Brohm freely admits he struggled and lost confidence as a rookie, but insists his performance this year hasn’t been as bad as statistics might indicate.
entire camp.”
Asked about Brohm’s performance this week, Packers general manager Ted Thompson offered a lukewarm endorsement.
“He is doing OK,” Thompson said. “I thought he played pretty well the other night and hung in there. Sometimes in preseason games you get a little distorted view, especially at that position, depending on what is going on in the game at the time. But Brian is doing OK.”
Earlier this month, Thompson admitted to at least a passing interest in Michael Vick before he signed with Philadelphia. And there is ongoing speculation that the Packers could be interested in picking up a veteran backup, a list that could include former New England Patriots backup Kevin O’Connell or Tarvaris Jackson if he is released by Minnesota.
But Brohm – who might have been a top pick had he left Louisville after his junior season but fell to the Packers in the second round last year – isn’t approaching Thursday as a big-picture referendum on his future with the Packers.
“I think you just worry about today, the next play at hand,” Brohm said. “When you start looking ahead too much, you overlook the task at hand and start making mistakes. So I’m just going to concentrate on each play like it’s my last.”
lder duty.
“I think he’s going to be excited about the opportunity of all the reps, no different than last week,” McCarthy said. “He was able to get more playing time. You can’t buy those live reps at any position, and especially quarterback. I know he’s excited about the bulk of time he’s going to get.”
Brohm was 15 of 29 for 101 yards with 3 interceptions in the Packers’ first two preseason games. He was more efficient in Arizona last week, going 4 of 5 for 45 yards, and has been solid in practice this week.
“I feel better in every aspect,” Brohm said. “I feel like I’m more decisive, I feel like my footwork’s better, I feel like I’m throwing the ball better. In every single aspect, I feel like I’m better than I was last year.”
But is he good enough to stick around in Green Bay?
“I’m putting this on film for our coaches,” Brohm said. “That’s how I look at it. I want to come back here (after the game) and grade out well from the game, have good comments from the coaches after the game. That’s really my goal, and that’s the only goal I have – each play, do the right thing, make the right read, have some success.”
