RENTON, Wash. (AP) -The Seahawks placed long snapper Tyler Schmitt on the injured reserve list, ending his season.
Seattle went through three snappers for kicks last season, then made Schmitt its first drafted long snapper in April. Schmitt, from San Diego State, missed most of training camp with what the team said was a sore back.
Tim Lindsey will likely be the snapper to begin the season, unless the Seahawks sign a veteran between now and the opener Sept. 7 at Buffalo. He was signed two weeks ago.
Seattle also placed special teams player Will Herring on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. The fifth-round draft choice in 2007, who played 12 games last season, has had a condition that is causing chronic joint inflammation. Team doctors have been trying to find the most effective way to treat the peculiar condition.
Herring could return to practice between the sixth and ninth weeks of the regular season. The Seahawks would then have to activate him to the roster within 21 days of him returning to practice in order for Herring to play this season.
The Seahawks also released wide receiver Joel Filani and cornerback Omare Lowe and placed tackle William Robinson on injured reserve.
Seattle hosts Oakland in the preseason finale on Friday night.
