GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Coach Mike McCarthy likes the progress of his first-string defense as the preseason winds down for the Green Bay Packers.
The defensive starters gave up a 40-yard touchdown run to Maurice Jones-Drew in a 31-21 win Friday night over Oakland, but shut down the Raiders the rest of the first half.
Free agent acquisition Julius Peppers had his first sack of the preseason. The Packers held Oakland’s starters to four straight three-and-outs and then forced a fumble late in the second quarter.
Linebacker A.J. Hawk said the defense feels good, but hoped the momentum would carry over to the regular season opener in two weeks against Seattle.
The Packers were off Saturday. They return to practice Sunday and finish up the preseason Thursday against Kansas City.
