ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -Daunte Culpepper will start at quarterback in Detroit’s preseason opener against Atlanta on Saturday.
Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Friday that top draft pick Matthew Stafford will enter the game at some point in the second quarter of the home game against the Falcons.
“Don’t read anything into it,” insisted Schwartz, who said he does not have a timetable for naming a No. 1 quarterback.
Stafford said the team’s three quarterbacks, including Drew Stanton, are expecting to get about the same number of snaps against the Falcons.
“It’s going to be fairly evaluated,” Stafford said.
Detroit is coming off the NFL’s first 0-16 season. The Lions’ season opener is Sept. 13 at New Orleans, where they hope to win their first game since Dec. 23, 2007.
e wants to be the quarterback who leads the Lions to an NFC North title, but he has tried to stay quiet during training camp as the quarterback competition is dissected and debated daily.
“I’ll talk to you guys after the game,” Culpepper said.
Stafford, the former Georgia star, says he has learned a lot from his 32-year-old teammate and he’s looking forward to playing for the first time since New Year’s Day.
