BEREA, Ohio (AP) – In his first training camp, linebacker Chris Kirksey is making his presence known to the Cleveland Browns.
The rookie, though overshadowed by Johnny Manziel, is pushing to be a major contributor early, as he is competing with inside linebacker Craig Robertson for playing time. Kirksey should, at the very least, be solidly in the rotation.
Pleased with his young linebacker’s performance so far, Browns coach Mike Pettine said earlier in the week that Kirksey would get more time with the first-team defense. He was on the field alongside veteran Karlos Dansby a number of times Wednesday, lining up to cover both tight ends and receivers in team drills.
Kirksey, a third-round draft pick and two-time captain at Iowa, had three tackles in the Browns’ preseason-opening loss to the Detroit Lions.
