SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme expects four-time Pro Bowl receiver Steve Smith to play in the regular-season opener.
Smith was spotted near the team cafeteria Tuesday wearing a sling, the day after he injured his right shoulder in practice. Delhomme said Smith was in considerable pain earlier in the morning.
X-rays were negative, but Smith is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks and perhaps the entire preseason. The Panthers’ first regular-season game is Sept. 13 against Philadelphia.
Receivers coach Richard Williamson said Dwayne Jarrett would practice with the first-team Tuesday afternoon opposite Muhsin Muhammad.
Smith was injured Monday night when he collided with cornerback Chris Gamble in a passing drill.
