FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -Patriots running back Laurence Maroney knows he’s been criticized for running sideways too much rather than attacking the hole. He plans to change that this year.
Maroney says he wants to run straight ahead more. That may get him more playing time in a crowded backfield where players have rotated in recent years. Now he’s in training camp where he’s competing with Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, Fred Taylor and BenJarvus Green-Ellis to get most of the carries.
Maroney has been inconsistent in his four seasons since New England drafted him with the 21st pick in 2006. He led the Patriots in rushing in two of his four seasons but hasn’t lived up to expectations. He did run for a career-high nine touchdowns last year.
