ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -Now that Eli Manning has a contract offer that will make him one of the country’s wealthiest athletes, the New York Giants quarterback can focus on which wide receivers will replace Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer.
Burress and Toomer had been Manning’s go-to guys since he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2004.
They’re gone now. Burress was released in April, about four months after he accidentally shot himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub. Toomer was not re-signed after 13 seasons and is with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Steve Smith, Domenik Hixon, Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham and rookies Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden are competing for the starting spots at the Giants training camp at the University at Albany.
