PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) -Buffalo Bills coach Chan Gailey is requiring all of his offensive linemen to wear knee braces through training camp in a bid to prevent injuries.
In his first year in Buffalo, Gailey says he first instituted the knee-brace mandate in 1991. That’s when he and Bills offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris first worked together with Birmingham of the World League of American Football.
As bulky as the braces might be to wear, Gailey has found that they’ve prevented serious injuries, especially given the heavy-hitting toll he puts his linemen through in practice.
Guard Eric Wood is not a big fan of braces, and wasn’t intending to wear them even after he broke his leg last season. Wood has relented and understands Gailey’s reasoning.
