FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) – The New York Jets will have a quarterback competition, after all.
Well, sort of.
Coach Todd Bowles says Wednesday that Geno Smith will head into training camp as the starter, and says it’s the third-year’s quarterback’s job to lose. Bowles insists there will be competition at the position this summer – even if Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn’t necessarily split snaps with Smith running the first-team offense.
Last week, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey sparked some controversy when he said the Jets aren’t heading into camp with a quarterback competition and that the team expects Smith to be the starter in Week 1.
Bowles says he and Gailey are on the same page on the issue, but clarified that Smith could lose the job if he performs poorly in training camp.
