NEW YORK (AP) -When no one appeared to be looking, New York Giants rookie safety Chad Jones slyly picked up a bat leaning against the railing at the top of the Mets dugout steps and took a couple of half swings.
Caught, a member of the Giants’ entourage at Citi Field on Wednesday told Jones to put it down. The third-round pick would not be needing it.
Jones, a two-sport star at LSU, chose football over baseball.
With a fastball that he said topped out at a major-league 94 mph and averaged 89-90, Jones helped LSU win a College World Series title in 2009, two years after winning a national championship with the football team.
He joined 18 other Giants rookies, both drafted and undrafted free agents, for a day at the ballpark – and easily felt the most comfortable.
