PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson is taking an indefinite leave of absence while he continues treatment for cancer.
Coach Andy Reid says Johnson “needs to concentrate all of his efforts on his recovery.”
The 67-year-old Johnson was diagnosed with melanoma in 2001. The team announced after the season that the cancer had returned and he had a tumor on his spine. Johnson underwent treatment and coached from a motorized cart during the team’s first post-draft minicamp, which wrapped up earlier this month.
Reid says Johnson is “struggling” but expressed hope that he would be able to return to the team soon.
Sean McDermott will handle the defense in Johnson’s absence.
