ASHBURN, Va. (AP) – The Washington Redskins have selected cornerback David Amerson of North Carolina State in the second round of the NFL draft.
The reigning NFC East champions chose Amerson with the No. 51 overall selection Friday.
Amerson set a single-season Atlantic Coast Conference record with 13 interceptions in 2011, although his play regressed last year.
Secondary is the primary need for the Redskins after the team ranked 30th in the NFL in pass defense last year.
Amerson was the first player taken by the Redskins in this year’s draft. The team didn’t have a first-round selection, having shipped it to the St. Louis Rams last year for the trade that led to Washington’s selection of Robert Griffin III.
