PITTSBURGH (AP) -The Pittsburgh Steelers added some youth to a productive but aging defensive line, choosing Missouri defensive lineman Evander “Ziggy” Hood of Missouri with the 32nd and final pick in the first round of the NFL draft.
Unlike three years ago, when the Steelers traded up in the first round for wide receiver Santonio Holmes rather than waiting until the final pick, they were patient Saturday and took the 6-foot-3, 300-pound Hood.
Hood had 10 sacks the last two seasons and was an All-Big 12 player.
The Steelers’ starting defensive linemen – Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton and Brett Keisel – and their backups all will be 31 or older next season, and the Steelers are expected to take several defensive linemen with their nine picks in the two-day draft.
