SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -The San Francisco 49ers have selected receiver Michael Crabtree in the NFL draft, snatching up the Texas Tech star when he unexpectedly slipped to the 10th pick.
Crabtree won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best college receiver after both of his two seasons with the Red Raiders, where he caught 231 passes for 41 touchdowns.
He was widely expected to be the first receiver selected, but Crabtree might have slipped in teams’ estimation when a stress fracture was discovered in his left foot at the combine, forcing him to cancel several workouts for NFL clubs.
He has mostly recovered from surgery on the injury, but nine teams passed on him – including the nearby Oakland Raiders, who went with Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.
