FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -The New England Patriots’ two newest defensive players have a headstart adjusting to life in the NFL.
Jermaine Cunningham and Brandon Spikes starred under coach Urban Meyer at Florida. And Meyer is one of New England coach Bill Belichick’s closest friends in college.
Cunningham says Belichick would come down to talk to the Gators at least once a year.
The Patriots grabbed Cunningham, a defensive lineman who could play outside linebacker, with the 21st pick of the second round on Friday night. Nine picks later, Belichick went for inside linebacker Spikes.
