NEW YORK (AP) – NFL medical personnel say there was significant improvement in the detection and treatment of concussions from opening day through the playoffs.
Citing the way concussions to two Seattle Seahawks were handled in a playoff game at Chicago, the co-chairman of the league’s head, neck and spine committee says the NFL has taken major steps in a short time to ensure such injuries are treated properly.
Dr. Richard Ellenbogen says Monday that when Seahawks tight end John Carlson suffered a concussion and was carted off on Jan. 16, the situation was handled “perfectly.” And when Seattle cornerback Marcus Trufant was hurt soon after, “ team physicians and professional athletic trainers were all over that.”
Earlier in the season, he admits, such treatment might not have been flawless.
