PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody of Philadelphia has a billion dollar problem on her hands.
Brody heard high-powered arguments Tuesday on lawsuits that accuse the NFL of hiding links between concussions and brain injuries.
Brody could side with the 4,200 former players and keep their lawsuits in federal court. She could rule for the NFL and send the health complaints to arbitration.
Or she could issue a split decision, keeping some of the fraud and negligence claims in court.
The cases could be worth more than a billion dollars.
About one third of the league's 12,000 former players have signed on. Some suffer from dementia, depression and other brain disorders.
The NFL insists that player safety is a top priority. But league officials say players are bound by terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
