MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Over the last two decades, a federal judge in Minnesota has turned into one of the most influential people in the NFL.
U.S. District Judge David S. Doty has presided over some landmark cases that have reshaped the league’s economic structure. In 1993, he engineered a settlement between the players, including Reggie White, and the owners that paved the way for the current free agency system.
This week, Doty ruled that the league had structured its TV contracts in such a way as to unfairly bolster its bargaining position with the union. It could wind up being a critical moment in NFL labor negotiations.
Those who know him well say Doty is one of the fairest judges around.
