INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indianapolis Colts have released 2007 NFL defensive player of the year Bob Sanders.
Team owner Jim Irsay announced the move on Twitter, thanking Sanders for his contributions.
Sanders was the Colts’ second-round pick in 2004 and made Pro Bowl appearances in 2005 and 2007, the same season he was voted the league’s top defensive player. He signed a new five-year, $37.5 million contract after that season, but injuries limited him to only nine regular-season appearances over the next three seasons.
The move was expected. Last month, his agent, Tom Condon, told The Associated Press, he “anticipated the same thing you do.” On Thursday night, team owner Jim Irsay said the team would make a decision by March 3.
