ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward says the NFL and players “make way too much money” to be putting next season in danger because of labor problems.
Speaking at Super Bowl media day on Tuesday, Ward says it would be a shame for games to be lost in 2011 if the two sides can’t draw up a new collective bargaining agreement.
The old deal expires in early March, and the union expects owners to lock out players. Among the key issues: how to split billions of dollars in league revenues; the league’s push to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18; and benefits for retired players.
Ward says: “No player wants to play 18 games. … You’re not thinking about the players’ safety if you’re trying to add two more games.”
