FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -Rex Ryan and Jim Caldwell are rookie head coaches who have taken different paths to the AFC championship game.
Ryan is the Jets’ brash defensive guru, while Caldwell is the Colts’ low-key offensive wizard. One will be headed to the Super Bowl after Sunday.
Ryan has spoken his mind from the moment he was hired by the Jets a year ago, talking about championships and declaring his team favorites to win it all a few weeks ago. He’s the son of a gruff former NFL coach who paid his dues in the lower levels of college before developing aggressive defenses in the pros as an assistant.
Meanwhile, the soft-spoken Caldwell was Tony Dungy’s hand-picked successor after helping the Colts’ offense turn into a juggernaut.
