NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -Titans coach Jeff Fisher now finds himself in the market for a coordinator for a second year in a row.
The Detroit Lions hired away Jim Schwartz as their new head coach on Thursday, leaving Tennessee with the opening. Fisher congratulated the Lions on their choice and said the Titans believed Schwartz has been ready for this step for a few years.
“As for our next defensive coordinator, we will take our time as far as replacing Jim, but that process has already begun,” Fisher said in his statement.
The Titans had to hire a new offensive coordinator in 2008 after Fisher fired Norm Chow about a year ago. Fisher hired Mike Heimerdinger two day slater to take a job he had held between 2000 and 2004 with Tennessee.
Fisher can pick from his own staff if he chooses to promote someone to take over a defense that ranked second in the NFL in 2008, allowing 14.6 points per game.
Defensive backs coach Chuck Cecil, who has been with Tennessee the past eight seasons, also could be a candidate.
Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch said losing Schwartz is a big loss since he has been one of the NFL’s top coordinators over his eight seasons.
“Hopefully, a new coordinator can come in and see the things we did well and build off what Schwartz established here,” Vanden Bosch said before Schwartz’s hiring was announced.
