ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The Capital One Bowl was not supposed to be the final destination for either of the participants.
Alabama was the overwhelming favorite to repeat as national champions. Michigan State went 11-1, split the Big Ten title and was still snubbed by the BCS.
So motivation shouldn’t be a problem when the seventh-ranked Spartans face the No. 15 Crimson Tide on Saturday. Both programs are out to prove they still belong among the best.
Michigan State is 0-3 in bowl games under coach Mark Dantonio and is using the game as a springboard into next season. The bowl could be the last game for many of Alabama’s recent stars, including 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, and they don’t want to disappoint in a possible finale.
