COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -South Carolina safety Emanuel Cook has been declared academically ineligible for the team’s upcoming bowl game.
Coach Steve Spurrier told reporters after practice on Tuesday that the junior from Riviera Beach, Fla., would not play in the Gamecocks’ Outback Bowl matchup with Iowa.
Spurrier says Cook failed to pass the minimum six hours required by the NCAA to be eligible for a bowl game.
Cook has led South Carolina in tackles for the past two years, with 92 tackles last season and 87 this year.
He was named to the 2008 Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference second team.
Coaches say they expect Cook to declare for the NFL draft and forego his senior year at South Carolina.
