SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Oregon State accepted a bid to the Emerald Bowl on Sunday to face Maryland, a day after finishing the season with a win over archrival Oregon.
The Beavers (8-4, 6-3 Pac-10) won their final three conference games to finish in third place in the Pac-10. Because co-champion Arizona State got passed over by the Bowl Championship Series and went to the Holiday Bowl and Oregon State went to the Sun Bowl last year, the Beavers ended up in the Emerald Bowl.
“I’m excited for our team and our fans,” coach Mike Riley said. “I’m really proud how this team battled back from a slow start to have a strong finish. I’m thrilled, especially for the seniors who have worked so hard for this opportunity. We’re looking forward to the challenge of playing a very good Maryland team from a strong conference.”
Maryland (6-6, 3-5 ACC) defeated then-No. 8 Boston College at home on Nov. 10 and became bowl-eligible two weeks later with a 37-0 win at North Carolina State. Maryland has advanced to postseason play in five of the last seven seasons under coach Ralph Friedgen.
“Our kids are excited to be going to the Emerald Bowl and appreciative of this opportunity,” Friedgen said. “We’re looking forward to playing a Pac-10 team, something we haven’t done in a long time.”
Maryland’s last game against a Pac-10 opponent was in a 1982 Aloha Bowl loss to Washington. The Terps’ last game in the state of California was in 1954, when they lost 12-7 at UCLA.
