LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Third-string quarterback Quinn Mecham is expected to start for Kansas against Iowa State on Saturday as Jordan Webb and Kale Pick both cope with injuries.
The Jayhawks (2-5, 0-3 Big 12) will be without wide receiver D.J. Breshears and running back Deshaun Sands this weekend. Coach Turner Gill said Tuesday both will serve one-game suspensions for unspecified violations of team rules.
Mecham, a junior college transfer, played his first minutes for Kansas in the final drive of Saturday’s 45-10 loss to Texas A&M. He finished 0-for-1 passing and was sacked once.
Webb started against the Aggies but left in the second quarter with an injured shoulder. He’s second on the depth chart but listed as doubtful for Iowa State (4-4, 2-2). Pick suffered a concussion against A&M and won’t play Saturday.
