MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The last time Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi hired a football coach, he wound up with an unknown guy who never was a head coach or coordinator in college or the NFL.
After firing Tim Brewster, Maturi says he’s in the market for a big name – like Tubby Smith, the guy he hired away from Kentucky to take over the basketball program.
Maturi says the university has enough money and enough resources to land a big name.
Some proven candidates include former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, Houston’s Kevin Sumlin and Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. Former NFL coach Tony Dungy has told Maturi he isn’t interested.
