PHOENIX (AP) – Oregon coach Chip Kelly didn’t really care that his team’s Top 10 matchup against Stanford was moved up three hours. He’ll play anytime.
The Pac-10’s new leadership, on the other hand, was thrilled by the decision. They’ve been pushing for the conference to get more recognition and having one of the biggest games of the season played in prime time on the East Coast was a boost.
The Pac-10 has been fighting this late-night battle for years.
The benefit of playing those night games is that there aren’t as many games on, giving TV viewers fewer options to switch off to.
But playing games that start at 10 p.m. or later in the East can mean fewer viewers since people might not want to stay up that late to watch a college football game.
