AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas coach Charlie Strong says quarterback David Ash is giving up football after struggling with the effects of multiple concussions.
Ash missed most of last season because of at least one concussion and lingering symptoms. He had been cleared to return this season and played in Texas’ opening victory over North Texas.
Hours after that game, the junior reported experiencing headaches and dizziness.
Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes has started the last two games against BYU and UCLA, both losses.
Ash had previously said that some members of his family were concerned about his return to the field this year, but he wanted to keep playing.
Strong announced Ash’s decision Wednesday night.
