COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Navy coach Ken Niamutalolo wanted to call in reinforcements this week to deal with No. 10 South Carolina.
The Midshipmen have played in jam-packed, noisy stadiums at Ohio State and Notre Dame in recent seasons. Niamutalolo even remembered how the Buckeyes held a tribute to the military that had fans in the Horseshoe applauding as Navy entered two years ago.
He’s sure that won’t happen at Williams-Brice Stadium. Not because fans don’t appreciate the military, they just remember Navy’s role in marring the Gamecocks only 10-win season in school history.
Navy’s 38-21 upset of No. 2 South Carolina in 1984 ruined a 9-0 start. A win would’ve landed the Gamecocks in the Orange Bowl for a national title shot.
Niamutalolo expects a loud, raucous visit to South Carolina (2-0).
