AUBURN, Ala. (AP) – Auburn is still managing to overcome its defensive deficiencies – barely.
Aside from the 2-0 record, the numbers aren’t pretty for the 21st-ranked Tigers’ defense.
A defense that starts seven sophomores and has six freshmen inserted as second-teamers ranks last in the Southeastern Conference in total and run defense and has given up 72 points in two games. Auburn is 118th nationally against the run.
The Tigers face a sizable challenge in Andre Ellington and Clemson (2-0) on Saturday in their first road game.
Defensive coordinator Ted Ford says Auburn played well in spurts against Mississippi State and had other periods when the defense’s performance was “not acceptable.”
The Tigers did have a potentially game-saving goal line stand at the end but also allowed 531 yards and two 100-yard rushers.
