DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -Thaddeus Lewis will be Duke’s starting quarterback when the Blue Devils face No. 22 Kansas this weekend.
Coach David Cutcliffe insisted Sunday that “we’re not trying to start a quarterback controversy.” He spoke the day after redshirt freshman Sean Renfree replaced Lewis and led the Blue Devils past Army.
Cutcliffe says Lewis fought both the flu and an ankle injury during the preseason, but “Thad’s our quarterback.” Cutcliff adds that he isn’t afraid to play Renfree, depending on how he feels games are going, but that Renfree isn’t ready to start yet.
Renfree was 7 of 8 for 106 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Lewis, who was 5 of 16 for 60 yards with a score, in the 35-19 win.
