DALLAS (AP) -Arkansas junior Darren McFadden, who won the Doak Walker Award last year as the top college running back, and finalists Mike Hart of Michigan and Steve Slaton of West Virginia lead a list of 51 candidates for this year's award.
The preseason list of candidates nominated by their universities was released Tuesday by the SMU Athletic Forum.
McFadden, last year's Heisman Trophy runner-up, rushed for 1,647 yards. Slaton finished fourth in the Heisman balloting last year and had 1,744 yards rushing. Hart rushed for 1,515 yards and was fifth in the Heisman race.
Other candidates include Boise State's Ian Johnson and Rutgers' Ray Rice.
