TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) – Arizona State’s young defensive players are about to get their first live test.
The Sun Devils lost nine starters from last year’s team and will rely on a group of young, inexperienced players in Thursday night’s season opener against Weber State.
Defensive tackle Jaxon Hood and safety Damarious Randall are the only two returners from last year’s Pac-12 South title team, and Hood has been playing catch-up after missing two weeks of camp to attend to a personal issue.
Arizona State should have it easy against the Wildcats, who went 2-10 last season, are young and will be playing their first game under former Utah assistant Jay Hill.
The Sun Devils’ schedule gets a lot tougher after Thursday, with a game against New Mexico before the Pac-12 season starts.
