BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – LSU says receiver Russell Shepard has been suspended by the team for the season opener against Oregon on Sept. 3 and is expected to miss a number of games while the university seeks his reinstatement.
LSU, which announced the suspension on Thursday, says Shepard violated NCAA rules by discussing an NCAA inquiry with a teammate. LSU has not said what the inquiry entailed.
Shepard, a junior, was expected to start at wide receiver this season and participated in a scrimmage on Tuesday, after which coach Les Miles said he was one of the top performing receivers.
He started nine games last season and had 253 yards and two touchdowns rushing and 254 yards and one touchdown receiving.
