CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – The chairman of Miami’s board of trustees says university president Donna Shalala has taken “a strong position” about the investigation into the Hurricanes’ football program
Leonard Abess’s letter to the university community was released late Friday night. It says it’s “especially important that the alleged misconduct not overshadow our current leadership and institutional values.”
The Hurricanes are under NCAA investigation because of claims brought by former booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro, who says he provided cash, cars, prostitutes and gifts to 72 players from 2002 through 2010.
In an interview that was posted online Friday by Miami’s student newspaper, The Miami Hurricane, Shalala said she plans to remain at the school “for a long time.”
