ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The University of Central Florida is coming into the 2011 football season with a target on its back.
The Knights are coming off a season in which they posted a program-best 11-3 finish, their first-ever bowl victory and season-ending national ranking. They lose 11 starters, including seven on a defense that has led Conference USA each of the past two seasons.
But they have one of the nation’s most highly-touted quarterbacks in sophomore Jeff Godfrey, who is on the preseason Davey O’Brien Award watch list and accounted for 23 touchdowns as a freshman.
The Knights likely won’t be in the Top 25 to begin the season, but have chances to garner attention early on with a home game against Boston College and trip to BYU both in September.
