LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -Joker Phillips and Charlie Strong are among a dozen black head coaches leading major college football programs this season.
That’s triple the number two years ago, but still only 10 percent of the 120 coaches at FBS schools.
The state of Kentucky is leading the way when it comes to hiring black head coaches. While nine out of every 10 of its residents are white according to the U.S. Census Bureau, all three FBS Kentucky schools are led by African-Americans – Phillips at Kentucky, Louisville’s Strong and Willie Taggart at Western Kentucky.
Gov. Steve Beshear says Kentucky sometimes gets a “bad rap,” but actually is “a very progressive state.”
Former Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy says it’s good the numbers are on the rise, but adds there is still much more to be done.
