PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) – It’s been another long summer at Atlantic Coast Conference headquarters because of NCAA investigations into some of its members’ football programs.
The ongoing probe into allegations of improper benefits and academic misconduct at North Carolina has lingered for more than a year. An investigation at Georgia Tech led the NCAA earlier this month to vacate the Yellow Jackets’ 2009 ACC championship and Orange Bowl appearance.
ACC commissioner John Swofford said Sunday that he’s disappointed and concerned “any time one of our schools has an NCAA problem” because “that’s not who we are as a league.”
Swofford says he supports tough penalties for rule-breakers, adding that “I am for consistency and how that’s applied from case to case. I am for expediency. And I am for simplicity.”
