COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – More than 120 athletic trainers, team physicians and other medical personnel came together to discuss concussions and other traumatic injuries from contact sports at a seminar hosted by South Carolina’s athletic and sports medicine departments.
Trainers and doctors from South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee presented case studies and talked about updated protocols in dealing with eye injuries, mouth damage and properly diagnosing concussions and other head trauma.
Presentations included Georgia athletic trainer Mike Dillon talking about the paralyzing injury to Bulldogs outfielder Johnathan Taylor and Tennessee trainer John Dean detailing the hit to football player Inquoris “Inky” Johnson that damaged nerves and blood vessels in his right arm and shoulder.
South Carolina medical director Dr. Jeffery Guy said the departments hope to offer more such seminars in the future.
