BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Jackson State is the favorite to win its division despite being ineligible to play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.
League coaches picked Jackson State to win the East Division and Grambling State to win the West in balloting released Tuesday at SWAC media day.
The league voted to make Jackson State and Southern ineligible to play for the title because of low APR scores. The NCAA banned both from the postseason but considers the SWAC game an extension of the regular season.
Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault, a Walter Payton Award finalist, is picked to repeat as SWAC offensive player of the year.
