INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -The head of the Bowl Championship Series is telling two U.S. senators to stay out of decisions involving college football.
Executive director Bill Hancock says those decisions should be left to people involved with higher education – not the government. He made the comments in response to a letter sent by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, in March. They were seeking information about how television revenue is distributed among the schools.
Hancock explained that schools in non-BCS conferences received $24 million from last year’s BCS games. He said that without the BCS, Utah, for example, would have likely played in the 2008 Las Vegas Bowl instead of the Sugar Bowl.
The NCAA confirmed the contents of Hancock’s letter on its website Friday.
