PITTSBURGH (AP) -Frank Cignetti Jr., previously the offensive coordinator at California, took the same position Wednesday at Pittsburgh, where he replaces Matt Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh, a former Pitt quarterback, held the job for four years before returning to the NFL last week as the New York Jets’ quarterbacks coach. Cavanaugh was the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator before joining Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt’s staff in 2005.
Cignetti was the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterbacks coach in 2007 before taking the Cal job. He has been a coach for 20 years, serving as the offensive coordinator at North Carolina in 2006 and Fresno State from 2002-05 following two seasons as the New Orleans Saints’ quarterbacks coach.
Cignetti is the son of Frank Cignetti, the former West Virginia and Indiana (Pa.) University coach. Cignetti played safety for the his father at IUP and later spent eight years as an IUP assistant coach, the final two as offensive coordinator. He began his coaching career as a Pitt graduate assistant in 1989.
