CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Rashawn Scott had a fax machine at Miami buzzing at 7:01 a.m. Wednesday.
The wide receiver from Melbourne, Fla., was the first player to join the Hurricanes on the first signing day under new coach Al Golden.
By 6 a.m., the Hurricanes’ football offices were teeming with excitement and anticipation. Three other players joined the team earlier: Defensive lineman Olsen Pierre and cornerback Thomas Finnie enrolled last month, and tight end Blake Ayles transferred from USC.
But signing day is like no other for coaches, and an hour later when Scott’s letter was the first to arrive in the fax machine outside Golden’s office, the beginning of a new era at Miami had arrived.
