HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – A major benefactor to the University of Connecticut says he was shut out of discussions about picking a new football coach and wants $3 million in donations returned.
Robert Burton also wants his family’s name removed from the football complex that their gifts helped build. He says UConn won’t be getting more donations.
Burton, chief executive officer of Greenwich-based Burton Capital Management, said in a Jan. 19 letter to athletic director Jeff Hathaway that he was unhappy with his management style and the process of picking new coach Paul Pasqualoni (pas-kuh-LOH’-nee). Burton says he earned a voice on the subject as the program’s top donor.
UConn says in a statement that it appreciates Burton’s support of the program and did consider his views during the coaching search.
The Day of New London first reported on Burton’s letter.
