IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A prosecutor tells jurors that a former University of Iowa athlete was asleep and helpless when former football player Cedric Everson sexually assaulted her.
In her closing argument Tuesday, prosecutor Anne Lahey told the jury the woman was “putty in his hands” and Everson could do whatever he wanted with her.
Lahey urged jurors not to make excuses for Everson’s conduct. She says they shouldn’t mistake the assault for a “youthful mistake” or believe his suspension from the football team is punishment enough.
Everson is charged with third-degree sexual abuse, which carries up to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors say he assaulted the woman after his teammate, Abe Satterfield, had sexual intercourse with her against her will. Everson’s attorney will deliver his closing argument later Tuesday.
